When you have a start-up, small business, or are an aspiring entrepreneur, having the right office materials is important to not only maintain a professional image but to also make you appear as a more credible and professional option versus your competition. When it comes to these items, there is a certain order we recommend on tackling this for a small business.
Start with business cards:
Professional business cards should not only include all key information but also serve as the primary enforcer of your brand image. A business card is likely the first branded item your potential customers will see. Not only should your business card include your contact information and branding elements, it should also serve to communicate or reinforce what it is your business does or what services it provides. Second item is envelopes:
Branded envelopes should come before letterhead and pretty much all other office materials. The reason is that you will use branded envelopes for mailing out invoices, past due notices, and other customer communication that won't require letterhead.
Third step is letterhead:
Branded letterhead is important but it may not have to be a printed item. We often design letterhead for clients and then create a MS Word template for them using it as the background and then the business can print the branded document as needed. Printed letterhead becomes more imporant when you want a professional look that requires edge-to-edge printing. You cannot print all the way to the edge of a piece of paper using a standard office printer. There will always be a white edge on the last 1/8" to 1/4" of the page and the white edge is usually not the same thickness between the top and the bottom. Professionally printed letterhead not only can provide this fully custom look but the quality of color and printing in general using an offset printer is much, much better than can be had from an office printer.
Fourth item is sticky notes or notepads:
While branded sticky notes or notepads are nice to have in the office, the primary purpose for these is to give to your clients that sit at a desk as part of their job. The branded notepads serve to increase brand awareness and "top-of-mind" for your business. These glued or sticky notepads can be printed in a variety of sizes.
